Grotta del Fico

Grotta del Fico, Coastal cave system in Baunei, Italy

Grotta del Fico is a limestone cave system on the coast near Baunei with multiple chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites. The entrance sits within cliffs that overlook the Tyrrhenian Sea close to Santa Maria Navarrese.

A shepherd discovered the cave in 1957 and made the first human descent, which later led to exploration by cave specialists. These early discoveries made it possible to map the tunnel system underground.

Locals view the cave as part of their coastal heritage and use the boat journey to reach it as a family outing. The site reflects the connection between land and sea that defines this region.

The cave is only reachable by boat from nearby ports and access works best during the warmer months. It makes sense to travel early in the day when the sea is calmer.

The cave once sheltered Mediterranean monk seals, representing one of the last known refuges for these rare marine mammals in the region. Today this historical connection reminds visitors of the site's importance for wildlife protection.
