Grotta del Fico, Coastal cave system in Baunei, Italy
The cave features multiple chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites, extending through limestone cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea at Santa Maria Navarrese.
A local shepherd made the first human descent into the cave in 1957, leading to subsequent explorations by speleologists who mapped its extensive tunnel network.
The Speleology Society Baunese maintains the site and provides educational tours that explain the geological processes behind the cave's mineral formations.
The cave maintains a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius year-round and requires boat transportation from nearby ports, with tours operating between June and October.
Mediterranean monk seals previously inhabited this cave system, making it one of the last known shelters for these marine mammals in the region.
