Real Cittadella, Star fort in Messina, Italy.
Real Cittadella is a star-shaped fort built on the San Raineri peninsula with five corner bastions designed for comprehensive coastal defense. The surviving structures include two bastions and a relocated gate that show the scale and design of the original installation.
Built between 1680 and 1686 under Spanish rule, the fort required demolishing an existing neighborhood to make space for its construction. During the 1848 Sicilian uprisings, the structure resisted attacks until military reinforcements reached the city.
The fort stands as a testament to 17th-century military engineering, displaying the architectural principles of Mediterranean defensive structures from that period.
Visitors can walk around the two surviving bastions and view the relocated gate at a nearby plaza. The remains are accessible from the outside, though interpretive materials on site are limited.
The fortress maintained its defensive capabilities during the 1848 Sicilian revolution, withstanding attacks until reinforcements arrived to support the structure.
