Riserva naturale regionale Tor Caldara

Riserva naturale regionale Tor Caldara is a protected coastal area near Anzio covered with Mediterranean vegetation and terrain that slopes toward a cliff. This clifftop, roughly 15 meters high, overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea and holds a historic tower at its edge.

The area was known for sulfur mining since Roman times, with operations interrupted during the Middle Ages. Mining resumed later and continued until the nineteenth century when activity ceased.

The tower dates from the sixteenth century and represents coastal defense practices of that period. Its location shows how important protection of this shoreline was for people living here.

Access is limited to certain days and times, so check ahead to confirm when you can visit. Groups or organized tours require prior authorization before entering.

Natural sulfur springs and bubbling mud pools emerge from the ground here, fed by volcanic soil beneath the surface. These geological features form through chemical reactions below and are visible along the coastline.
