Hochfirst, Mountain summit at Ötztal Alps, Austria-Italy border
Hochfirst is a mountain summit in the Ötztal Alps standing at 3,403 meters on the border between Austria and Italy. The peak separates the Austrian side of Sölden from the Italian village of Moos in Passeier and can be reached from established routes on both sides.
After World War I, the mountain became the border line between Austrian Tyrol and Italian South Tyrol. The territorial division made this peak a natural dividing point between the two countries.
The summit sits where Austrian and Italian mountaineers meet, each side bringing its own approach and customs to reaching the peak. Local climbing traditions have evolved differently on either side of the border, reflecting the distinct mountain cultures of each region.
The ascent is safest during the summer months from June to September when trails are snow-free and weather is more stable. Climbers should prepare with sturdy footwear, sun protection, and plenty of water since the mountain offers little shade.
On clear days, climbers can see more than 300 peaks exceeding 3,000 meters from the summit. This vast panorama reveals the scale of the Ötztal Alps and explains why this mountain ridge became such an important border marker.
