Naumachia Augusti, Artificial lake in Trastevere, Italy

The Naumachia Augusti consisted of a large rectangular basin measuring 533 by 355 meters located on the right bank of the Tiber River.

Emperor Augustus commissioned this naval arena in 2 BCE to stage a recreation of the Persian-Athenian battle involving 30 ships and 3,000 participants.

The basin hosted water spectacles where Roman citizens gathered to witness elaborate naval battles demonstrating the maritime power of the empire.

The Aqua Alsietina aqueduct supplied water specifically constructed to fill the basin, which maintained a depth of approximately 1.5 meters.

The facility included an artificial island connected by a bridge that displayed the largest tree trunk in Rome during Tiberius's reign.
