Belluno Civic Museum, Art and archaeological museum in Belluno, Italy
The Belluno Civic Museum is an art museum with archaeological collections located in the city of Belluno. It combines finds from various time periods with artworks by local and regional artists.
The museum grew from the 1872 donation of Belluno physician Antonio Giampiccoli's picture gallery, joined by Florio Miari's bronzes, medals and local books and the 1837 natural history cabinet's scientific materials. It opened to the public in 1876 in the Palazzo dei Giuristi, built in 1664 by the College of Jurists and damaged by the June 1873 earthquake. First curator Osvaldo Monti added the deliberation registers of the old Comunità di Belluno. Since 26 January 2017 the art collections are in Palazzo Fulcis, while the archaeology remains in the Palazzo dei Giuristi.
The museum displays everyday objects and burial items from the ancient inhabitants of the region. These pieces tell you how people lived here in earlier times and what mattered to them.
The art collections are in Palazzo Fulcis on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, while the archaeological collection stays in the Palazzo dei Giuristi on Piazza Duomo; the two are separate buildings, so plan which one you want. The prehistoric room holds finds from Campon di Monte Avena and Col del Buson.
The oldest find is a hunter buried about 12,000 years ago in Val Cismon, his grave lined with stones painted in red ocher with geometric and naturalistic motifs. The flint workshop from Campon di Monte Avena, worked 30,000 years ago, is also displayed.
