Belluno, Provincial capital in Veneto, Italy

Belluno is a commune in the Dolomite foothills where the Ardo meets the Piave, with old streets running through the center. Houses and public buildings sit on a hill framed by mountain peaks.

Romans founded a settlement here that later organized itself as an independent commune. In the 15th century the town became part of Venetian territory and served as a hub for timber transport from the surrounding forests.

The Cathedral, reconstructed after the 1873 earthquake, stands near the Palazzo dei Rettori from 1491, displaying the architectural evolution through different periods.

The train station sits in the valley and offers connections to larger cities in the region. From the old town several marked trails lead up into the mountains and provide access to higher elevations.

Piazza dei Martiri opens to the south and reveals the valley where the two rivers meet. On clear days you can see several mountain ranges lined up one behind the other from there.
