Campodolcino funicular, Underground funicular railway in Campodolcino, Italy.
Campodolcino funicular, also called Sky Express, is an underground funicular that connects the valley station at 1082 meters with the mountain station at Motta at 1721 meters. The route runs entirely through a tunnel, climbing about 640 meters in elevation across 1406 meters of track length.
The funicular was built in the 1990s and opened on December 21, 1996, representing a major construction project for the region. It enabled modern access to the mountain and winter sports facilities that expanded significantly afterward.
The funicular links village residents and winter sports visitors to the slopes and trails around the mountain, serving as the main way people reach higher elevations for work and recreation.
The funicular carries up to 160 passengers per trip and takes less than 4 minutes to complete the route, making it a quick ascent. The underground tunnel provides shelter from bad weather, so trips run reliably regardless of conditions.
The funicular runs entirely underground through a tunnel with a 4.50-meter diameter and is Italy's first completely subterranean funicular. This underground design keeps passengers protected from harsh weather and makes the ride comfortable year-round.
