Museo Civico Archeologico, Archaeological museum in Sassoferrato, Italy

The Museo Civico Archeologico is an archaeological, art, and religious museum located in the town of Sassoferrato, in the Marche region of central Italy. It occupies the Palazzo dei Priori, a civic building from 1355, spread across a ground floor and a main exhibition floor above.

The Palazzo dei Priori was built in 1355, shortly after Sassoferrato established its own governing body. The museum opened in 1932, thanks to Professor Guido Vitaletti, who gathered artifacts from the ancient city of Sentinum and secured a space to display them. After the 1997 earthquake forced a closure, the museum reopened in 2006 with new rooms added to the collection.

The museum sits inside the Palazzo dei Priori, whose walls still display the coats of arms of former city rulers, including one from Pope Paul V. These emblems are a direct reminder of how closely the town was once tied to both religious and civic power.

The entrance is on Piazza Matteotti in the center of Sassoferrato and is easy to find on foot. A single ticket also covers entry to the Perottiana Collection, which is housed separately, so it is worth planning both visits together.

One of the museum's main rooms has a full-size copy of a mosaic that now lives in a museum in Munich, having left Sassoferrato in the 1800s. Visitors walking across this room are effectively standing on a reproduction of a work they cannot see in Italy anywhere else.
