Incoronata

The Incoronata archaeological site extends across a large plateau overlooking the Basento River valley near the Gulf of Taranto in southern Italy.

Between the 10th and 6th centuries BCE, the site contained an indigenous settlement that later interacted with Greek colonists arriving from the Aegean Sea.

The cemetery reveals distinct burial practices where men received weapons and women received weaving tools, reflecting clear gender roles in ancient society.

The excavation area offers research opportunities for understanding Early Iron Age communities through systematic documentation of structures and artifacts.

Bronze calcophones, found in select female graves, indicate the presence of ritual performances led by prominent women who might have served as priestesses.
