Casa del Soldato, Rationalist building in Sturla, Italy
Casa del Soldato is a five-story rationalist building located in Sturla, Genoa. An elliptical glass staircase rises through the upper sections and extends into a spire above the roofline.
The building was constructed between 1936 and 1938 as a Casa del Fascio and originally bore a different name. After being abandoned in 2009, it was renamed and now faces plans for adaptive reuse.
The building's name commemorates a local figure and embodies the rationalist architectural language of its era. Its open stairwell and generous windows reflect a time when modern forms served as expressions of new ideas.
The building sits significantly below street level, with its public floor aligned to the street grade. Access is gained from the lower area, so be prepared for a shifted spatial orientation.
The building was designed by architect Luigi Carlo Daneri, whose style drew inspiration from Le Corbusier's ideas, particularly through the use of pilotis supporting the structure. This floating construction was a bold design choice that liberated the ground floor and realized modern spatial concepts.
