Palazzo Bianchi, Eclectic building in La Spezia, Italy

Palazzo Bianchi is a four-story building at Via Nino Bixio 84 featuring a facade of smooth ashlar stone and a marble portal from Carrara. Inside, two opposing flights of stairs connect the floors and meet at intermediate levels beneath a central skylight.

Architect Carlo Piaggio designed this building in 1894 for entrepreneur Edoardo Bianchi during La Spezia's urban expansion period. The structure was built when the city was modernizing and wealthy residents were commissioning new residential properties.

The entrance hall features circular medallions displaying female portraits, which reflect the ornamental style popular in late 19th-century Italian buildings. These decorative details show how wealthy residents wanted their homes to express taste and refinement.

The building's marble facade and main entrance are easy to spot and make orientation straightforward from the street. The central skylight in the stairwell provides good natural light, making it simple to navigate the interior spaces.

The wrought iron entrance grilles bear the initials EB, a subtle personal mark of the owner woven into the metalwork. The first upper floor showcases curved tympanums and an extended marble balcony that sets this level apart.
