Nakanoshima, Volcanic island in Tokara Islands, Japan
Nakanoshima extends over 34 square kilometers with Mount Otake reaching 979 meters above sea level in the Kagoshima Prefecture waters.
The island transferred from United States control to Japanese administration in 1952 following the post-World War II Northern Ryukyu Islands provisional government period.
The native Tokara ponies represent a distinct horse breed that developed on the island after their introduction from Kikaijima in 1890.
Transportation to Nakanoshima requires a seven-hour ferry journey from Kagoshima City, as the island does not maintain an airport facility.
The terrain combines an elevated plateau with eroded volcanic remnants, with the last recorded volcanic activity occurring in 1914.
