Minamikyushu

Minamikyūshū is a city on the southern Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, facing the East China Sea. The city comprises several districts that developed from separate towns, with Chiran standing out as a major tea-growing region.

The city was formed in 2007 through the merger of three municipalities: Kawanabe, Chiran, and Ei. This union combined areas with long tea-growing traditions and historical importance in the region.

The Chiran Samurai District showcases traditional residences and gardens from the Edo period, where you can observe classic Japanese craftsmanship and garden design techniques. As you walk through the narrow streets, you see how residents and visitors today move through these historic spaces and interact with the preserved architecture.

The city is best explored on foot or by public transportation, particularly the Chiran area with its historic streets. Allow time to move between districts at a relaxed pace and take in the local landscape.

The Chiran area produces a globally recognized green tea known for its deep color and fine flavor. This tea culture is so central to the region that it shapes the daily rhythm and economy of the area.
