Metabaru Air Field, military airbase
Metabaru Air Field is a helicopter training base in Saga Prefecture operated by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. The facility features runways, hangars, and maintenance areas where UH-1J and UH-60JA helicopters are stationed for training and support missions.
The airfield was established in the 1940s as a training center for the Japanese Army Air Force during World War II. After the war, it was resumed in the 1950s and has since served as a helicopter training center for the Ground Self-Defense Forces.
The airfield takes its name from the surrounding area in Saga Prefecture. Today you see helicopters operating regularly while the nearby communities maintain a respectful relationship with the base and its mission.
The site is accessible by train to Yoshinogari station and then by local bus or taxi. Visitors can attend open house events to see helicopters in action and speak with staff members.
During annual graduation ceremonies, trainees receive their pilot wings in front of families and friends. These events demonstrate the strong connection between the military base and the surrounding community.
