Tokyo Imperial Palace, Royal residence in Chiyoda, Japan.

The Tokyo Imperial Palace occupies 1.15 square kilometers of land with moats, stone walls, gardens, and numerous buildings for the Imperial family and administration.

The palace stands on the former site of Edo Castle, becoming the permanent Imperial residence in 1869 when Japan moved its capital from Kyoto to Tokyo.

The Matsu-no-Ma Pine Chamber within the palace serves as the primary location for Imperial ceremonies, official appointments, and state functions throughout the year.

The East Gardens remain open to the public year-round, while guided tours in English and Japanese operate twice daily from Tuesday through Saturday with advance registration.

Visitors can access the foundation of an original Edo Castle tower that burned down during the 17th century, providing insights into medieval Japanese architecture.

Reservation recommended. The palace is closed for visits on Fridays. What a pity.
