Hatsushima, Island destination in Atami, Japan
Hatsushima is a volcanic island in Sagami Bay off the coast of Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture. The landmass consists of several terraces formed by volcanic uplifts that rise roughly 51 meters (167 feet) above sea level.
Archaeological findings confirm settlements from the Jomon period that stretch back several thousand years. Documents from 1351 record 18 households on the island during the medieval period.
The northern section hosts a small community of fishermen who deliver fresh catch daily to restaurants along the dining street. Visitors can watch the landing pier where boats return with their haul in the early morning hours.
Ferries depart nine times daily from Atami Port and take roughly 30 minutes for the crossing. Walking paths on the island lead through wooded slopes and to viewpoints along the coastline.
The SARUTOBI facility offers a course between treetops that runs with views over the bay. Participants move on suspension bridges and zip lines through the forest area above the coastline.
