Shimizu, Former harbor city in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan
Description
Shimizu is located along the northwest coast of Suruga Bay, featuring a large commercial port that is protected by the natural formation of Cape Miho. The city extends along the waterfront and is shaped by port infrastructure and the presence of fishing vessels.
History
The city gained municipal status in 1924 and remained independent until 2003, when it merged with Shizuoka to form a consolidated region. This fusion marked the end of an era as a self-governing community with its own local administration.
Culture
The Daidogei World Cup, held annually since 1992, brings international street performers to various locations throughout the city each November. Visitors can watch acrobats, musicians, and other artists performing on streets and squares during this celebration.
Practical
The harbor is Japan's largest tuna port and remains a vital hub for fishing and maritime trade activity. Visitors can observe the busy port from the waterfront and experience the maritime operations firsthand.
