Isahaya, Commercial city in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan

Isahaya stretches across an isthmus strip where the Shimabara and Nagasaki peninsulas meet, bordered by Omura Bay, Ariake Sea, and Tachibana Bay.

The area transformed from a 13th-century commercial center into a castle town during the Edo period under the leadership of the Isahaya family.

The city maintains strong connections to traditional Japanese agriculture, particularly through its extensive rice cultivation in lands reclaimed from the Ariake Sea.

Isahaya functions as a transportation hub with direct rail connections to Nagasaki, located 16 kilometers southwest, including access to the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen line.

The Isahaya Bay reclamation project, initiated in 1989, added 35 square kilometers of usable land through the construction of embankments and sluice gates.
