Shimanto, Administrative city in Kōchi Prefecture, Japan

The Shimanto River flows through this southwestern city of Kōchi Prefecture, covering 632 square kilometers with mountains and waterways dividing residential areas.

The region transformed from ancient Tosa Province through the rule of the Hata clan during the Kofun period to its current formation in 2005 by merging Nakamura and Nishitosa.

Local fishermen maintain traditional methods like hiburi fishing with torches for sweetfish and shibazuke techniques for catching eels in the Shimanto River.

The Tourist Information Center near Nakamura Station provides English-speaking staff, bicycle rentals, and baggage delivery services for visitors exploring the region.

The city features chinkabashi bridges without railings, designed to submerge during floods, allowing water and debris to flow over without damaging the structure.
