Mount Apoi

Mount Apoi is an 810-meter summit in the Hidaka Mountains of Hokkaido, marked by exposed peridotite rock formations and alpine meadows. The bare rock faces and open grasslands at higher elevations create a distinctive landscape that contrasts sharply with the forested slopes below.

The mountain formed millions of years ago when tectonic movements brought ultramafic rocks to the surface in this region. These geological processes created the distinctive rock formations that define the landscape today.

The mountain holds special meaning for the local community as a symbol of the region's natural character. You'll notice its importance reflected in how locals discuss their environment and in educational activities centered on the site.

Hiking conditions are best from April through November when trails are open and weather is more stable. An information center at the base provides guidance about trail conditions and current access information.

The summit supports roughly 80 species of alpine plants, including 20 varieties found nowhere else due to the mineral-rich soil. These rare plants make the mountain a special destination for nature enthusiasts and botanists.
