Nagano Station, Railway interchange station in Nagano, Japan.
Nagano Station is a railway interchange in Nagano, Japan, connecting high-speed and regional rail services. The building incorporates seven island platforms across multiple levels, with two elevated platforms for Shinkansen services and three ground-level platforms for local trains.
The station commenced operations on May 1, 1888, and underwent a substantial transformation in October 1997 with the introduction of the Nagano Shinkansen line. This transformation converted the station into a major high-speed rail hub for the region.
The departure melody for high-speed trains features the regional song 'Shinano no Kuni', reflecting local musical traditions since January 2015.
The station connects multiple railway lines including the Hokuriku Shinkansen and Shinetsu Main Line, with direct trains to Tokyo taking between 80 to 100 minutes. The platforms are clearly marked and provide access to both long-distance trains and local connections.
Located at an elevation of 360.5 meters (1,183 feet), the station integrates both above-ground JR East platforms and underground Nagano Electric Railway platforms in its design. This arrangement allows travelers to switch between different railway operators without leaving the main building.
