Kamishichiken, Geisha district in Kamigyō-ku, Japan

Kamishichiken is a geisha district in northwest Kyoto with narrow streets lined by wooden buildings and teahouses. The area includes residences for the entertainers and maintains the traditional appearance of a historic Japanese entertainment zone.

The district was founded in 1444 when seven teahouses were built using materials from the reconstruction of Kitano Shrine. The name comes directly from these original seven buildings that shaped the area.

Geishas and maikos working here perform traditional dances and music for visitors in the teahouses. These spaces show how the district remains a living center for classical Japanese entertainment.

The district is open to visitors during day and evening hours and can be explored on foot. Combining a walk here with a visit to the nearby Kitano Tenman-gū Shrine creates a rewarding tour.

The district's lanterns display a distinctive emblem of red circles on white paper, representing skewered dumplings. This design sets the area apart from other Kyoto geisha districts.
