Ueda, Castle town in Nagano Prefecture, Japan

The Chikuma River divides this mountainous city of 157,480 residents into two sections, with numerous temples scattered throughout its 552 square kilometers.

The Sanada clan constructed Ueda Castle in the 16th century, successfully defending it twice against Tokugawa forces before the establishment of the Edo period.

The Ueda Sanada Festival features period-costumed processions and taiko drumming performances near the castle grounds, celebrating the region's samurai heritage.

The Hokuriku Shinkansen connects Ueda to Tokyo Station in 90 minutes, making it an accessible base for exploring Nagano Prefecture's attractions.

Anraku-ji temple contains Japan's only surviving octagonal three-tiered pagoda, representing a distinct architectural achievement from the medieval period.
