Susono, Industrial city at Mount Fuji foothills, Japan
Susono is a city in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture shaped by its geography of mountain ranges and forested areas. Mount Fuji dominates the skyline, with Mount Ashitaka and the Hakone Mountains framing the landscape on either side.
The region began as Tokugawa shogunate territory before railway development in the late 1800s started its transformation. Municipal consolidations in the mid-20th century established the modern city as it exists today.
The Suyama Sengen Shrine, part of the Mount Fuji UNESCO World Heritage Site, draws visitors with its centuries-old cedar trees standing on the grounds. Traditional purification rituals performed here remain central to the spiritual life of local worshippers and pilgrims.
The city is well connected by the Tomei Expressway and regional rail lines, making it easy to arrive and travel through. Schools and public facilities are distributed across the area for residents and visitors alike.
Toyota began building Woven City in 2021, an experimental smart city project within Susono's boundaries. The project tests new technologies and living concepts in a controlled environment.
