Otsu, Core city in Shiga Prefecture, Japan
The capital of Shiga Prefecture stretches along Lake Biwa, with mountains in the west and densely populated areas near the water's edge.
From 667 to 672, Ōtsu Palace served as Japan's capital under Emperor Tenji before the city transformed into a major transportation hub during the Edo period.
The traditional art form of Otsu-e, developed in this region during the Edo period, features lightweight paintings with strong brushstrokes and humorous depictions.
Travelers can access the city through multiple train connections from Kyoto, including the JR Tokaido Line and Keihan Line, with frequent services throughout the day.
Lake Biwa Canal, built in the 1890s, enabled the operation of Japan's first streetcar railroad services and remains a significant engineering achievement.
