Gotsu, Coastal city in Shimane Prefecture, Japan
Located in western Shimane Prefecture, Gotsu spans across 268 square kilometers, featuring coastal terraces in the north and forest-covered hills in the south.
The settlement evolved from a village in 1889 to a town in 1914, before achieving city status in 1954 through the consolidation of multiple villages.
The local artisans maintain traditional crafts, including the production of Sekishu roof tiles and Iwami ceramics, reflecting the regional pottery techniques.
The city connects to other regions through the San'in Main Line railway and multiple highways, including the San'in Expressway and National Route 9.
In 1905, Gotsu residents rescued over 200 Russian soldiers from the sinking transport vessel Irtysh, initiating an annual commemorative Russian festival.
