Daito Bunka University, Private university in Itabashi, Tokyo, Japan
Daito Bunka University is a private institution with two campuses, the main one situated in Itabashi in northern Tokyo and another in Higashi Matsuyama in Saitama Prefecture. It offers programs through eight faculties covering humanities, economics, foreign languages, law, international relations, business administration, environmental studies, and sports science.
The institution opened in 1923 as Daito Bunka Gakuin with the aim of creating an Asian-centered educational model as an alternative to Western-style universities. Over the course of the 20th century it expanded its offerings and developed into a full university with multiple faculties.
The institution takes its name from its founding idea to build education on the principles of Eastern philosophy, combining Chinese and Japanese intellectual traditions. Visitors can see this focus in calligraphy studios and reading rooms dedicated to classical Asian texts on campus.
The main campus in Itabashi sits about 20 minutes by public transport from central Tokyo and can be reached via several train lines. Visitors can enter the grounds on regular teaching days during daytime hours, though it helps to check in advance which areas remain open to the public.
The university operates a Beatrix Potter Reference Library since 2006 at Saitama Children's Zoo, collecting first editions and rare prints of the British children's author. This unusual connection arose from individual faculty members' commitment to English-language children's literature.
