Ikutora Station, Railway station in Minamifurano, Japan
Ikutora Station is a former railway station on the Nemuro Main Line in Hokkaido, operated by JR Hokkaido. The main building displays signage in both Japanese and Latin characters, reflecting the linguistic mix typical of rural stations in the region.
The station began operations in December 1902 and served as a transportation link in the remote region for over 120 years. It closed in April 2024, marking the end of a long chapter in Hokkaido's rail history.
The station became connected to the 1999 film Poppoya, which used it as the fictional Horomai Station, and a commemorative sign at the entrance still marks this filming history. This film reference has made it a place of local memory for people in the region.
The station is located in a rural area with few facilities nearby, so it is advisable to plan the visit in advance. Visitors should keep in mind it is a closed station and facilities are limited to what remains of the structure.
The station held the designation of hikyō eki, meaning a railway station in an isolated location with minimal passenger activity. This classification remained characteristic of its location in a sparsely populated region throughout its operational years.
