Usa Shrine, Shinto shrine in Usa, Ōita Prefecture, Japan.
Usa Shrine is a Shinto complex in the city of Usa, Ōita Prefecture, on the island of Kyūshū. The main buildings follow the Hachiman-zukuri style with wooden construction, where several halls connect through covered corridors and sit at different levels across the hillside.
The complex was established in the 8th century and quickly grew into the main center for Hachiman worship across Japan. During the Nara and Heian eras, the site received support from the imperial court and became a major religious reference point throughout the country.
This place serves as the head for all Hachiman shrines throughout the country, shaping religious practice at thousands of related sites. Worshippers from across the nation travel here to take part in ceremonies held throughout the year and offer their prayers.
The grounds remain open every day with no entrance fee required, and regular buses run from Usa Station to reach the site. Guided visits are offered in several languages and help explain the different sections and their layout.
The worship halls sit at three separate levels on the hillside and link together through a system of raised covered walkways that wind through dense forest. This arrangement allows visitors to experience the architecture at different elevations while moving through the natural surroundings.
