Ito, Hot spring resort city in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan
Ito is a city on the eastern coast of Izu Peninsula known for its thermal springs. Ten public bathhouses and numerous hotels provide access to natural hot water.
Fifteen small settlements along the coast were brought together during the Edo period. The city received its official status in 1947 following further administrative reforms.
The public bathhouses carry names like Takegahana and Wadahama, referring to the original coastal villages. Residents and visitors share the hot springs in everyday life and use them throughout the year.
Regular trains connect the city with Atami in about twenty minutes. For the journey from Tokyo Station, the limited express takes roughly one hundred minutes.
A grass-covered volcanic crater with a diameter of three hundred meters sits atop Mount Omuro at 580 meters (1,900 feet) elevation. Visitors reach the crater rim via chairlift and can walk along the edge.
