Tosa Province, Historical province in Shikoku Island, Japan

Located in southern Shikoku, Tosa Province extended along the Pacific coast and included mountains, rivers, and fertile agricultural lands.

The Yamauchi clan governed Tosa Province from Kochi Castle during the Edo Period, producing 250,000 koku of rice annually.

Ki no Tsurayuki wrote The Tosa Diary while serving as the provincial governor in 930 AD, documenting life in the region.

The province borders included Awa to the northeast and Iyo to the northwest, with its capital established in present-day Nankoku.

The province name lives on through the Imperial Japanese Navy battleship Tosa, which became the lead vessel of its class.
