Kamiamakusa, city in Kumamoto prefecture, Japan
Kamiamakusa is a city in Kumamoto Prefecture located in the Amakusa Islands region of Kyushu. The city spans multiple islands and peninsulas connected by bridges, creating a fragmented landscape with fishing ports and coastal settlements scattered throughout the area.
The city was formed in 2006 through the merger of several smaller municipalities in the Amakusa region. This area has a long history as a fishing and trading zone with connections to the East China Sea trade networks.
The city is best accessed by car since the separate islands are connected by bridges and public transportation is limited. Visitors should allow extra time for traveling between different coastal areas, as distances are greater than they may appear on a map.
