Fukuroi

Fukuroi is a city in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, spanning 108 square kilometers with green tea plantations, industrial facilities, and residential areas along the Pacific coastal region. The landscape shows how agriculture and manufacturing coexist with neighborhoods where people live and work.

The settlement began as a post station called Fukuroi-juku on the Tokaido highway during the feudal period, connecting Edo and Kyoto. This role as a stopping point shaped its growth and importance over time.

The city practices traditional vegetarian cuisine called Shojin ryori, which uses ingredients like kelp, shiitake mushrooms, and silken tofu in everyday cooking. This culinary tradition remains visible in how locals eat and gather in food spaces.
