Imperial Theatre, Western theatre in Marunouchi, Japan
The Imperial Theatre is a Western theatre building in Marunouchi that overlooks the gardens and moat of the Imperial Palace. The auditorium holds 1897 seats and houses the Idemitsu Museum of Arts on the ninth floor.
The building opened in 1911 as the first Western-style theatre in Japan. After complete reconstruction, it reopened in 1966 under the management of the Toho Company.
The name reflects the nearby palace grounds, and the building has hosted performances that combine Western theatrical traditions with Japanese staging. Visitors often see local performers and directors reinterpreting international works for Japanese audiences.
Performances use numbered seating, and the building offers accessible entry. Visitors planning to see the museum on the ninth floor should allow extra time.
The building closes in February 2025 for complete redevelopment as part of an urban renewal project. It previously hosted the Japan Record Awards from 1969 to 1984.
