Nissay Theatre, Theatre building in Yūrakuchō, Japan
Nissay Theatre is a theatre building in Yūrakuchō that stands in the heart of Tokyo's entertainment district near Hibiya Station. The complex spreads across several floors and includes different performance spaces alongside foyers with glass-covered sections.
Togo Murano designed the theatre, which opened its doors on October 20, 1963, incorporating elements of modern Japanese architecture. The building arose during a period of economic growth following the Second World War.
The building takes its name from Nippon Life Insurance Company and displays works by contemporary artists in its entrance hall. Visitors also find a café and a bookshop specializing in performing arts inside.
Metro lines Chiyoda, Hibiya, and Toei Mita all run to Hibiya Station, from which you can reach the theatre in less than one minute. Main entrances lie at ground level and accommodate wheelchair users.
The Nissay Theatre Foundation awards the annual Nissay Backstage Award to stage technicians and other crew members behind the scenes. This recognition honors the often overlooked work of those who handle the technical flow of performances.
