Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Art museum in Marunouchi, Japan
The Idemitsu Museum of Arts is an art museum on the ninth floor of the Imperial Theater Building in Marunouchi, Japan. The space offers views of the imperial garden and houses galleries for rotating exhibitions of Asian art.
The collection grew from the personal holdings of Sazo Idemitsu, who gathered it over decades. The house opened its doors in 1966 and has since displayed objects from private acquisitions of a reconstruction era.
The collection bears the name of its founder and displays works from Japan, China and Korea across several centuries. Visitors can view ceramics, calligraphy and lacquerware that once belonged to private hands and are now open to the public.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 to 17, with Friday hours extending to 19. The entrance sits inside the Imperial Theater building, and the galleries are accessible by elevator.
A dedicated gallery displays shards of ancient pottery from Egypt and Asia, including pieces from Fustat near Cairo. The fragments come from kilns that operated over centuries and offer insight into old craft techniques.
