Onna, Coastal village in Kunigami District, Japan
Onna is a coastal village in Kunigami District stretching along the western side of Okinawa Island, extending roughly 27 kilometers from north to south. The landscape features white sand beaches, coral reefs, and the Sekiryo Mountains.
The area was originally established as Unna Magiri, an administrative division of the Ryukyu Kingdom in 1673. It became the modern village of Onna through Japanese administrative reforms in 1908.
The village maintains Ryukyu traditions through an open-air museum where visitors can see traditional homes and watch traditional crafts like sugar making being practiced.
The village is roughly 80 minutes by car from Naha Airport and connects to neighboring areas through National Route 58 and local prefectural roads. Getting around within the area is straightforward using the main roads.
Despite stretching 27 kilometers along the coast, the village is remarkably narrow, measuring only around 4 kilometers across from east to west. Mount Onna marks the highest point within these tight boundaries.
