Ryukyu Mura, Cultural theme park in Onna, Japan
Ryukyu Mura is a theme park in Onna featuring ten reconstructed buildings with red tile roofs, wooden interiors, and traditional stone walls. The structures come from different locations across Okinawa and were carefully reassembled here as a way to preserve these architectural forms.
The park was created to save traditional houses from rural Okinawa that faced demolition. Buildings were gathered from across the region and brought together to form a living record of how local architecture once developed.
The central courtyard hosts daily performances of folk dances, eisa celebrations, and karate demonstrations in traditional dress. These activities reveal how the people of this region have expressed themselves through movement and skill for generations.
The grounds are easy to walk around with paths connecting all the buildings, so you can move freely between each house. Shaded areas and rest spots are spread throughout if you need a break while exploring.
You can learn to play the sanshin, a traditional stringed instrument that defines the sound of Ryukyu music. Hands-on workshops let you try painting bingata textile patterns and molding shisa guardian figures, giving you direct experience with local crafts.
