Agena Castle, Gusuku castle in Uruma, Japan
Agena Castle is a gusuku fortress in Uruma built on Ryukyuan limestone foundations. The site occupies a large elevated area, with the Tengan River providing natural protection along its northern edge.
The castle served as a fortified residence for the Ōgawa Aji, a regional leader, during the 15th century. It was an administrative center within the Ōgawa Magiri district of the Ryūkyū Kingdom.
The castle grounds contain spaces dedicated to Ryukyuan spiritual practices that remain visible to visitors today. These areas show how people connected with their beliefs through the landscape and structures around them.
The site is located in the northern part of the Agena district and is accessible on foot. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the terrain is uneven with steps leading up to the main castle area.
The castle's inner gate features an arched design that was uncommon in Japanese fortifications of its time. This architectural element was later recognized as a national treasure due to its historical significance.
