Kumage District extends across multiple islands of Kagoshima Prefecture, including Tanegashima and Yakushima, encompassing a total area of 789 square kilometers.
The district underwent substantial administrative changes in 1896 when it incorporated the former Gomu District, leading to an expansion of its territorial jurisdiction.
The three towns of Nakatane, Minamitane, and Yakushima maintain traditional fishing practices and local festivals that reflect their maritime heritage.
Regular ferry services connect the islands within the district, while Yakushima Airport and New Tanegashima Airport provide air transportation for residents and visitors.
The district manages both Tanegashima island, known for its space center, and Yakushima island, recognized for its thousand-year-old cedar trees.
