Kobe University, National research university in Kobe, Japan
Kobe University is a national research institution in Kobe spreading across several sites throughout the city, while the main Rokkodai Campus sits in the hills near the mountain of the same name. From up there the view reaches down to the coastline and across urban districts, making the campus feel open and elevated.
The institution began in 1902 as a commercial school and gained full status as a research institute in 1949 after national education reforms. During the 20th century new faculties gradually expanded the original program into the current sciences and humanities.
The Rokkodai Library houses research collections connected to commerce and economic history, reflecting the port city's trade roots, and draws students as well as visiting scholars from many countries. Some buildings combine modern study spaces with views over the bay, making campus life relaxed and outward-looking.
Visitors should expect hillside paths, as the main campus is reached from the city center by steep roads and footpaths. Faculty buildings spread across different levels, so comfortable shoes help.
The institution runs the country's only dedicated faculty of maritime sciences, connected to the city's port history. Students train there on ship simulators and can even join research vessels.
