Yoyogi Park, Metropolitan park in Shibuya-ku, Japan.
Yoyogi Park is an urban park in Harajuku, Shibuya, offering broad lawns, several ponds, wooded sections, and public sports facilities. Bike paths run through the grounds and connect the different sections to one another.
The grounds first served as a military parade area and were later used by US forces as the residential complex Washington Heights. The facilities were converted for the 1964 Summer Games Olympic village and afterward handed over to the public as a park.
Street musicians and dance groups gather near the fountain on weekends and rehearse choreography or play drums on the open lawns. Visitors often see young people in homemade costumes or athletes training traditional martial arts on the grass.
The park sits a five-minute walk from Harajuku Station and opens daily with no admission charge. Restrooms, parking spaces, and bicycle rental are available on site.
A dense forest of ginkgo trees turns golden yellow in late autumn and creates a natural backdrop in the middle of the city. The trees were planted after World War II and now form one of the oldest ginkgo groves in Tokyo.
