Naze, dissolved municipality in Kagoshima prefecture, Japan
Naze is a dissolved city on Amami Ōshima island in Kagoshima Prefecture, now administratively part of a larger city. The streets feature simple buildings with tiled roofs, and the coast is dotted with small harbors where fishing boats work.
Naze was established as a city in 1946 following World War II as part of the island's rebuilding effort. In 2006, it merged with nearby towns and villages to form the larger city of Amami, though locals still call the main area Naze.
Naze reflects the traditions of the Amami Islands, where local festivals and events celebrate throughout the year. The community gathers during special occasions with music, dance, and food that keep their customs alive.
The area is easily reached by public transportation connecting Naze to other parts of Amami Island. Early morning is the best time to explore, when markets fill with fresh catch and fishing activity is underway.
Even though Naze is no longer an independent city administratively, locals still call the main area by this name. This persistence of the name shows how strongly local identity and community feeling are rooted here.
