Sōka University, University in Hachioji, Japan
Sōka is a private institution in the western part of the metropolitan area, situated on a spacious campus with lecture halls, libraries and research buildings. The grounds bring together eight faculties, including Economics, Law, Education and International Liberal Arts, distributed across several building complexes.
The institution opened in April 1971 following educational ideals set by Daisaku Ikeda, who sought to create a center for global understanding. Over the following decades, new programs and research facilities were added, shaping the profile of the institution.
The name translates to 'university of value creation' and reflects Buddhist principles visible in everyday campus life. Students from more than seventy countries gather in common spaces and participate in international festivals that mark the academic calendar.
Visitors navigate best using information boards near the main buildings, where campus maps are displayed. International students receive housing in separate dormitories for male and female residents, with single and double rooms available.
The institution has awarded more than three hundred and sixty honorary doctorates to global figures such as Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks and Mikhail Gorbachev. The Pioneer Wind Orchestra has won awards at national competitions multiple times and performs regularly throughout the academic year.
