Minatomirai Station, Underground railway station in Minatomirai district, Yokohama, Japan
Minatomirai Station is an underground railway station in Yokohama's waterfront district, built beneath the Queen's Square shopping complex. It has an island platform with two tracks and is served by the Minatomirai Line, which runs between Yokohama Station and Motomachi-Chukagai Station.
The station opened on February 1, 2004, as part of the new Minatomirai Line, which was built to serve Yokohama's rapidly developing waterfront area. This new line gave the district its first direct rail link to the rest of the city.
The station sits directly below Queen's Square shopping complex, so passengers can step off the train and walk straight into shops and restaurants without going outside. This kind of seamless connection between transport and daily life is a common feature of Japanese city planning.
Signs throughout the station are in both English and Japanese, making it easy to find your way around even on a first visit. The platforms get noticeably crowded during morning and evening rush hours, so it is worth allowing extra time if you need to make a connection.
The station has a direct underground walkway leading to Landmark Tower, one of Japan's tallest buildings at around 970 feet (296 meters), so visitors can reach the observation deck without ever stepping outside. The same underground network also connects to the Pacifico Yokohama convention center.
