Shingai Station, railway station in Kami, Kochi prefecture, Japan
Shingai Station is a small railway stop in the city of Kami, Kochi Prefecture, featuring two side platforms connected by a unique switchback track layout. The station has a simple white building with a modest waiting room, is unstaffed, and offers basic facilities like benches for passengers.
The station opened in 1947, replacing a signalbox called Shinkai from the 1930s that managed train movements in difficult terrain. During World War II, the area was a strategic point in Japan's military network and served as a fortress with important military facilities.
The station is unstaffed, so tickets cannot be purchased from an attendant. Visitors should buy tickets on the train or use the honor system, and there are only benches in the waiting area with no restrooms or vending machines.
This station is one of only two in Shikoku that uses a switchback system where the train must reverse direction to overcome the steep incline. The unusual design makes train rides here interesting and different from other stations.
