Meinohama Station, Railway and metro station in Nishi-ku, Japan
Meinohama Station is a railway and metro station in Nishi-ku, Fukuoka, Japan, where JR Kyushu trains and Fukuoka City Subway services both stop. It has several platforms and brings the two transit systems together under one roof.
The station opened in 1925 under a private railway company and was later folded into the national rail network. When the Fukuoka City Subway was built in the late 20th century, the site was expanded to accommodate both systems.
The name "Meinohama" refers to an old coastal area, and this connection to the shoreline still lives on in the name of the surrounding neighborhood. On the platforms, commuters and travelers cross paths daily as they switch between the two lines, giving the station a steady, unhurried rhythm.
Signage throughout the station clearly separates the JR Kyushu and subway areas, making it straightforward to find the right platform. Travelers switching between the two networks should allow a little extra time to move between the different sections of the station.
Meinohama is both the terminus of the Chikuhi Line and the western end of the airport subway line, so trains from both services start and finish their journeys here. This means passengers waiting on the platform often board an empty train, which is a rare comfort at a busy interchange.
