Yamato district, Former administrative district in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan.
Yamato district was a former administrative area in Fukuoka Prefecture on Japan's Kyushu island. It encompassed a geographic region that included both agricultural and urban zones where several towns operated alongside one another.
The district was established in 1878 and operated as a local administrative unit for nearly a century. Its end came in two stages: in 2005 when two towns joined Yanagawa city, and in 2007 when remaining communities merged with other areas to form Miyama city.
The region contributed to the development of local dialects and traditions within Fukuoka Prefecture, maintaining connections with both urban and rural communities.
The area can be visited today by exploring the modern cities that emerged from the former communities. It is easily accessible since these are established urban and rural centers connected by local transportation.
Yamato did not disappear at once but was dissolved through two separate administrative reforms, revealing the gradual restructuring of local governance in this part of Kyushu. This two-stage dissolution is unusual for Japanese municipal consolidations.
