Otaki, Mountain village in Kiso district, Japan

Otaki is a village in the Kiso Mountains in southwest Nagano Prefecture, located across a large mountainous area. The settlement is surrounded by dense forests and offers a sense of rural mountain landscape with few modern developments.

The village was established during the Meiji period, when Japan reshaped its local administrative structures. This era marked significant changes in how rural areas in Japan were organized and governed.

The village maintains local traditions through handcrafted practices and the cultivation of mountain herbs used in regional cooking. Visitors can observe how people here live in rhythm with the seasons and continue traditional methods of using the mountain forests.

The place is difficult to reach, as there are no direct railway connections or national highways, and travel requires careful planning. Visitors should expect to rely on private transportation and plan for flexible travel times.

The area is dominated by forest, with much of it under state protection and among Japan's most heavily forested regions. This dense forest cover shapes the appearance and character of the place in a striking way.
